Brain Circuits: How They Impact Behaviors, Development, and Learning To Read After Epilepsy Surgery

Lucine Uddin will discuss how our brain's neurons, connections, and lobes don't work in isolation. Functions and information are processed by many different areas of the brain that are connected by axons ("white matter") and other structures that form circuits of information exchange. When these circuits are interrupted, whether by seizures or by epilepsy surgery, issues with attention, social cognition, and learning can occur. Understanding how your child's brain circuits have been interrupted will help you advocate for their educational success, as well as help you understand their behaviors and challenges. 

Joanna Christodolou will discuss how, in typically-developing persons, reading is primarily a function of the left hemisphere of the brain within circuits involving the temporal lobe. Reading after hemispherectomy or other resection surgeries which remove the temporal lobe in childhood can be challenging because of interruption of critical brain circuitry. One published research paper shows that only 42% of children after hemispherectomy read appropriately for their age. But what can be done to help these children access literacy? What assessments should be done to determine the child's reading strengths and weaknesses?

Joanna A. Christodoulou works at the intersection of education and neuroscience. Her program of research, conducted at MIT in the Gabrieli Lab and at MGH Institute of Health Professions, focuses on brain and behavior correlates of development, difficulties, and intervention effects for reading. Goals of this work include 1) informing our understanding of reading challenges regarding how they are defined and conceptualized; 2) investigating effective assessment and identification approaches for struggling readers; 3) exploring and predicting the impact of interventions for readers; and 4) harnessing individual variability to improve educational outcomes. Her work is informed by a clinical role at the Learning Disabilities Program at Boston Children's Hospital. Joanna's research has been supported by organizations including the Spencer Foundation; the Fulbright Foundation; the Mind, Brain, and Behavior Initiative at Harvard; and the National Institutes of Health. She has worked as a reading instructor, taught courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and has led professional development workshops for educators and parents internationally.
